Correction: Reading 《Revolutionary Road》is not the right cure when you are full of cold symptoms.
Yes, seriously it depressed you even further with Richard Yates's original novel version. After reading the novel, I have to say the movie is not that faithful to the original at all. However, it is hard to turn a novel story precisely to a movie and this piece is particularly impossible. I adore the movie but there are some important clues missing in the movie version.
#1 Frank's reminiscence on his father taking him to NY and having luncheon in a hotel restaurant is missing in the movie. It is a key to help the audience to sketch Frank's character and to understand his ultimate desire or fear hidden for years. Where is his inner outcry for being wanted and loved? Well, he did mention his father two times by words in the movie. But this part of the screenwriting really failed to impress and had not enough focus.
#2 The Wheelers' attitude in their circle is not showing comprehensively in the movie. Their real opinions on the other couples like the Cambells and the Givings are missing. I am long to see a scene which is full of hypocrisy and awkwardness from each couple in their social gathering. It was one of important reasons why April felt the urge to leave for Paris so strong. By hearing April talking her awareness on that , again, the audience like me without any reading of the original novel, could not see the point.
#3 If you ask me who is the first character in the novel, I will say it is Frank Wheeler. But in the movie, I will say it is April Wheeler. Maybe Kate Winslet's extraordinary acting is over come Leonardo DiCaprio's, maybe the screenplay is determine to put more weight on April this character.
Maybe after all, the screenplay has to be in this way to highlight their conversations with John Givings, to bring up the climax for the audience in the theatre.
