I certainly have no soul to "Mona Lisa" but I absolutely have heart to this very famous painting from Johannes Vermeer: Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Really, going to Mauritshuis in Hague to see this painting is on my wish list. Interestingly, 12 of Johannes Vermeer's paintings are kept in the US(some are considered to be fake) and 1 is stolen in Boston, 6 are in Germany, 6 are in Netherlands only(the painter's home country) and 5 are in UK.
The use of light he emphasised in his paintings, of course it is very captivating. But this masterpiece is the most special one. I am transfixed by her gaze. I want to know more about her. She really has a story to tell. Surely, I am not the first and only one think like that. Writer Tracy Chevalier has written a historical novel Girl with a Pearl Earring. It is quite a beautiful fiction but a bit clichéd I must say. I also enjoy the film which is based on her book.
This is why I call it great. It keeps inspiring people over hundreds of years.
