My heart is totally shattered.

這個下午我聽著Edith Piaf首 《Padam Padam》, I was crying out loud.

BBC

We were the bloody tourists in Cambodia

It was an afternoon when Mr. Hand and I arrived in Angkor International Airport. I could feel the heat as soon as we get off the plane. Without any trouble, I got the Visa on arrival after filling up a form, and of course, paying the money. It was unpleasant when the officer used a correction pen making a little mark on my passport cover page. He just marked it to remind himself we had paid the money. Ridiculous!

Well, never mind, we were still in good mood. And because of that, we didn't mind paying seven US dollars to take a taxi to the hotel. We didn't exchange money since the US dollar is widely accepted in Siem Reap. On the way to the hotel, the taxi driver kept talking us to hiring him for the next day tour in Angkor temples. I kept thinking we should get a bike to visit the temples, so we ignored his hard selling.

The road to the down town in most of the section was paved, but the side ways for the pedestrians were left to be sandy, and sometimes littered. I saw some cops at the intersections maintaining the order, but most of the time I saw them just standing around. To my surprise, there were quite a lot private cars. Of course, Tuk-tuks and motor bikes were seen on the road very often. I saw more tourists riding bikes on the road rather than the local people doing it. Hotels were built along the main road one after another. "Hotel Town" is the nickname I make for Siem Reap.

I liked where we were staying instantly. The room was clean and tidy every day. The staff from the hotel was very helpful. Mr. Hand forgot his camera in the taxi and the staff helped us to phone the company the next morning. Luckily we had the camera back. It is good to know that the people in there are so kind and honest.

Waiting staff in the roof-top restaurant were well dressed and with formal manner in serving. I particularly liked a waitress who always greeted us gracefully. Once I made some comments on her dress and she told me she bought the dress from Singapore. I must say she was really a beauty. And once again, a waitress made travel to Singapore, it leaves me an impression that the economic growth in Cambodia is actually doing well.

I quite understand when I do travel, never expect there are some perfect toasts cheering you up in the morning. To be fair, the breakfast in the hotel was not bad, let me say, the food tasted safe. Don't know from when Mr. Hand likes eating toasts for his breakfast no matter in where, I kind of sticked with the French Toasts since I couldn't buy any wholemeal or dark rye bread in there.

Then we discovered a typical market place for the bloody tourists to dine and shop. In one of the restaurants there, we were crazy about its assorted fruit shakes. It was risky to dine outside the hotel but we could not help. It was the local taste in that restaurant kept us visiting although the food from there brought me diarrhoea.

To be continued...

An optician's murmuring

I hate working on Saturday. I am an optician in this brand new store selling eyewear glasses. I stand at the shop most of the time rearranging those glasses' display. Young ladies from a beach nearby are wearing shorts and bra tops walking pass and not giving a single glance at the shop at all. They are all heading to the cafes and too busy with the chit-chat. Watching myself wearing a suit in a lovely summer day is very frustrating. The pace is too slow in here without any customer. I take no enjoyment with the job at all. I try to be professional in the shop, that's why I keep rearranging whipping the glasses to waste the time.

When I am whipping up a pair of glasses, there are two young ladies approaching to me.

"Excuse me, could you help me to repair this frame?" the lady in black asks me.

Oh, finally I've got something to do. What a piece of cake for me! A nail has been lost. Soon I found a nail which could be well matched to the original size. It took me only several minutes to fix the frame. I handed it back to her after whipping the pair of glasses into shining bright.

"How much do I need to pay?" the lady asked.

"You don't have to pay. It's free." I told her.

She gave me a surprising look and told me, "Look, I'd like to pay for what you have done."

She is funny. "I am not allow to charge in this case." I told her.

She still can't believe it but have no more insistence. "Thank you very much I appreciate it. You have a nice day." She said and left with her friend.

Well, I am sure you are having a nice day, but not me. What time is it now? Only 1:00PM? SIGH..........

--------------------------------------------------
In a coffee shop, there are two young ladies chatting.

"Gosh, can you believe it? I don't need to pay up to 60 bucks for a damned nail. I never thought it could be free. Unbelievable."

"Yes, you should buy me a drink."

"Last time I paid 40 bucks for the same problem in OPSM at the mall. I NEVER go to there again. How dare they charged me 40 bucks for a tiny little nail!"

"Now you don't want to pay for the service at all. Middle-age woman!"

"Well, that's different. I would still like to pay if they could be reasonable. Like 20 bucks or something. Anyways, I learn the new reasonable price for the service in the new shop today. I might go to that shop to buy my contact lenses as well."

"Don't you notice that optician have no smile at all? How can he serve customers well?"

"I feel no offense. Come on, if I were him who working on Sat. I would be probably the same have no smile at all. I am satisfied with his service."

"That because you don't have to pay and the whole dealing is totally out of your expectation that gives you the extra sensational shopping experience. What if he charged you 40 bucks with that ill face? Are you still happy with the service?"

"Well, handsome ones can serve customers with their grumpy faces because they are still handsome. As long as they are still handsome, I am alright with that."

"You are not only having an ill face but an ill mind."

"Thank you!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. 我未到過New York, 肯定唔知邊度好逛;

The embarrassment on the last day of the year

I was taking a nap, the phone rang...

“Hi, JK. B is here. Can you please help me to find something in the garage? My car is broken down and I need that thing to fix it. It's a black pipe like gadget with some electronic plugs. It's bigger than a coke can. And it's in a big metal box.”

"Wow...how can I find it? There're hundreds of millions things down there. OK, I will try. Hold on. "

Then I was in the garage searching for the damn thing in the dark.

"Hey, B! I can't find it. Can't even see the damn big metal box."

"OK, did you walk through the concrete wall? Don you know what I am talking about?"

"What? Where's the concrete wall. How can I walk through if there's one, gosh!"

"Well I mean behind the shelf on the right hand side. You walk through there. Get yourself behind the shelf."

"You should say so at the beginning."

Then I walked into a messy place behind the shelf.

"Can you see it? Are you there?"

"Yes, I'm still alive and I still can't see the damn thing. There's only a shelf with some plastic bins."

"......a bit far away from the shelf...... "

I kept searching for the metal box around and finally found it.

"I've found it. There're a lot of cables."

"Pull them out and look for that little coke can like thing."

I was searching for the damn thing like the homeless searching for food from the rubbish.

"Hooooh, I've found it. Is it made in Germany? There's a circular thing inside and some metal bits. Jesus, what's that? It's so dirty. My hands are all black."

"Oh, yes it is! Thank you so much! Now I will organize the delivery to my place. I am in Coromandel right now. You write down the address and the man will come to collect it in an hour. You just find a box to keep it safe. The address is ......"

"OK, is that the only thing I need to do? Pack it up and wait for the courier to come? Do I need to pay for the service?"

"Nah, I will pay for it when the courier come."

"Are you sure? I never heard that people can do that."

"No worry, just do what I said. Thank you so much. Can't imagine if you are not at home today."

"It's alright. I just get used to hearing your car is down occasionally. Good luck. "

"......See you later."

An hour later the courier came. He was a handsome man.

"Hi there."

"Hi. How are ya? Here's the stuff."

"What's it?"

"A plastic thing, I don't know exactly."

"Fine, as long as it's not the glass."

He was still standing at the door and waiting .

"So, do I need to pay?"

"Yes, it's $14 dollars thank you." Holly shit! My face turned red immediately.

"Oh, the guy who organizes the delivery would like to pay it after the delivery "
I felt so embarrassed. The whole idea was so brainless and I should not be the one to blame.

"No, you need to pay it first." The man said with a smile. The smile made me feel like I was fucking hopeless.

"Don't you mind I just run to the ATM and get some cash. Look, I am so sorry that I haven't prepared the cash." I said so with my guilty look.

The man laughed and said, "Well, nah, I don't want to wait. But I can send it for free. I can do it. I am the person who run the operation system in the office. I am not the guy who is supposed to do this pick-up job, I fill his place coz he's gone away for holidays. I can just use my free ticket. I can send it free for you."

I was in a shock with an "O" shape mouth. Believe it or not, I have no choice.

"Your phone number please? I need to give you the track number later since you can't have the receipt right now as you can't pay for it. OK?"

"Sure, the phone number is......" I felt even more embarrassed.

"Right, at 5:30pm, the track number will be informed to you."

"Thank you so much" I said with a relieved look.

"You are very welcome. Happy new year. See ya."

"Happy new year."

The man ran away...
